Like many towns scattered along the West Coast of Te Waipounamu (South Island), Hokitika was too flooded with prospectors during the 1860s during the gold rush. However, what makes this small town even more special is that it is just a few minutes away from Arahura - one of the main birthplaces of pounamu, or greenstone, which has, and continues to be carved into precious taonga. With such a precious and protected heritage, Hokitika and its iconic black sand, driftwood laden beach is a must-visit.

Greymouth (1:30pm) - We start by leaving Māwhera Greymouth Train Station/Visitor Centre.. As we head south down State Highway 6, our knowledgeable guide will share insights into the local area.
Hokitika (1:45pm/2:00pm) - Just 30 minutes later, we are here! Known as the West Coast’s ‘Cool Little Town’, Hokitika is famous for its rugged black sand and driftwood laden coastline.It is here that we drop you off and wish you safe travels for your next onward adventure.
