It was first discovered by French whaler Captain Langlois, who saw the potential for a town to serve whaling ships. After acquiring the land, he returned to France to bring back German and French settlers. Upon returning and learning that the Treaty of Waitangi had been signed, establishing New Zealand as a sovereign country, the French settlers chose to stay. Today, Akaroa’s French street names and colonial houses continue to reflect its unique heritage.

Crater Rim Scenic Drive – Depending on the weather, we may take the scenic route around the rim of the old volcanic crater. From here, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of Akaroa Harbor and the Pacific Ocean.
